Things have improved a lot for Joe Goldberg in the past couple episodes. Not only did he manage to convince Beck to give him a chance, he also eliminated his last remaining rival for her affections, her best friend Peach. Of course, getting rid of Peach didn’t magically make all
his problems go away, as any sane person could have told him if only he asked
for a second opinion. Murder is very rarely the answer, Joe! But at least it
did take the show to some previously unexplored places, for example we got to
see Joe and Beck spend some quality time together that was not constantly
interrupted by her other jealous psycho stalker. Things were only perfect for a
short time, though, as Beck grew increasingly resentful of Joe just… being there for her. If Joe was anyone other
than you, you know… himself… I would actually feel bad for him. As it is, I
spent a good chunk of this episode gleefully cackling. Finally, he has all he’s
ever wanted – that is, Beck all to himself – and she’s ruining it. Fantastic. I truly love this new development.
The episode actually opened a month after Peach’s funeral,
and everyone seemed perfectly fine going about their lives. I’m not sure what
sort of fallout I expected from her death but the show basically avoided all of
the possible drama by doing this timejump, and that’s probably for the best.
Beck’s in therapy now because that’s the only place she can actually talk about
and process her feelings, which says a hell of a lot about how she actually
feels about his „perfect boyfriend”. Joe is also her boss now after she got
fired from whatever she was doing before, and she’s constantly getting on his
nerves by slacking, being late, and just generally being uninterested in all
the kindness he shows her. It doesn’t take long for Joe to convince himself
that she’s actually having an affair with her therapist, because of course. So
doing as Joe does, he gets himself an appointment under a fake name and unloads
everything about his made-up relationship with „Renaldo” on poor Doctor Nicky,
played by a truly, truly awful
looking John Stamos.
… Ew. He’s the kind of doctor who smokes pot during his
sessions because it’s „medicinal”, and he doesn’t catch on to Joe’s little game
even though he’s describing basically the same things Beck did, just from a
different perspective with different names. He’s probably not too long for this
world either, if Joe has any say in it.
Things come to a breaking point for Beck when Joe not only
completely disregards her wish for a quiet birthday by throwing her a big
party, but also calls her selfish and rude for being late. This was actually
such a cliché moment, the talking shit about someone when they’re right behind
your back bit. We’ve all seen it a million times and yet this time I actually
had to stop the video and just snort-laugh for a good thirty seconds before
continuing, it was such a riot to see Joe get busted. What a dumbass. And then
he took it even further by following Beck when he thought she was meeting with
her new lover, and actually getting caught! It seems like his miraculous luck
has finally started to run out. Any day now and someone’s dog is gonna dig up
Benji’s charred remains in the woods and then it’s time for Joe to do some
explaining! Or else his ex is gonna show up, as suggested by the title of
episode 9, ’Candace’.
But that’s for another review. Right now, Joe and Beck seem
to be over, and he’s seeking solace in the arms of a new neighbour. He’s still
checking Beck’s phone though, and we all now with his type it’s not over until
it’s really over…
