You 1x05 Living with the Enemy

Unbelievably enough, Joe and Beck are now officially in a relationship, or I think so, anyway. In American media they usually make a big deal about whether two people are „just dating”, „messing around”, or „being exclusive”. I said it once that this is weird to me because I always imagined that if you don’t like someone after about three dates you should just cut it off and not stay in this undecided place until you can finally decide whether you want to make it exclusive or not, because that’s not fair to anyone. Anyway, Beck was referred to as Joe’s girlfriend by another character in this episode and Joe didn’t correct her, but why would he? It’s Joe. He not only thinks he’s a boyfriend, he’s the PERFECT boyfriend. Jury’s still out on Beck’s opinion though ,since it was already established that she likes to mess around with guys on Tinder and have one night stands, so I’m not sure whatever it is that she has with Joe constitutes a relationship in HER mind. What’s clear is that they’ve been spending a lot of time together, which means that Joe constantly has to hang out with Beck’s awful friends, and needless to stay, things spiral out of control pretty quickly.

First off, to clarify, we can’t actually know for sure if these people are awful or not. We only see them through Joe’s point of view and of course he would think that, he thinks he’s God’s gift to Beck and everyone else in her life is undeserving of her in some way. Annika, for example, is harmless enough. Sure, she’s vain and shallow and her career goal is to become an „Instagram influencer”, but she doesn’t seem like an overall bad person. So naturally Joe has to beat us over the head a thousand times with the fact that she’s SUCH a racist, because of a leaked video where she drunkenly rants about how she should maybe start dating black guys because at least they might appreciate her big butt. Now I’ve spent enough time on Tumblr to know that literally aynthing can be racist if you try hard enough, especially since the very definition of being a racist shifted from „I think certain races are inferior to others and should be treated accordingly” to „I’m a white person who said literally anything about a person of another race” a long time ago... But even so, this was an extreme overstatement. Not to mention how hilariously hypocritical it is to hear Joe of all people berate her for it, like… „oh yeah I definitely killed at least one person and now I’m actively ruining the life of this one girl I like, but at least I’m not a racist!” They did the same thing in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia multiple times, but at least there the gang’s hypocrisy is right under everyone’s nose and we’re supposed to catch up on it… Here, it kinda feels like this was supposed to score some good guy points for Joe, which in itself is a laughable attempt. I’m firmly Team Annika here.

And then there’s Beck’s other friend, Joe’s arch-nemesis, Peach. Now, she probably is exactly as terrible as Joe makes her out to be: a vapid self-absorbed rich girl who takes on poor people as „projects” just so she can flaunt her own superiority every chance she gets. I do like how she casually continues to call him ’Joseph’ even though (or more like because) she knows it annoys the hell out of him, but the problem is, I know Joe is the bad guy because I’ve been shown him being terrible multiple times. Peach hasn’t. She just assumes there’s something wrong with him because he’s just a guy who works in a bookstore, and how could someone lie that ever be good enough for her precious „Beckalicious” (ugh)? And this is where we encounter one of the biggest twists of the series so far. As Joe finds out after he steals Peach’s laptop (because of course he does), Peach has an embarrassing amount of pictures and videos of Beck stored on there. Too many to be ever useful for blackmailing, and since even her password is that godawful nickname, Joe probably correctly concludes that Peach is just another of poor Beck’s psycho stalkers! Or, you know, in usual Joe fashion he’s all like „This is not like the completely normal and healthy love I have for Beck, no Sir, this is sick and perverted!” The truth lies probably somewhere in the middle. Right now I don’t think Peach could ever get as violent or threating as you, but she’s clearly not above a little emotional manipulation, as shown when she pretends to overdose on pills just so Beck would drop everything to run to her and even forgive Peach for setting her up with a shady publisher. Because poor thing is so tortured, this is not the first time she’s tried to kill herself, you know.

None of this is gonna fly with Joe though, so in the end he decides to once again take things into his own hands and get rid of this Peach nuisance once and for all, by bashing her head in with a rock while she’s on her usual morning run. But then Joe is „not a killer”, as it has been pointed out multiple times before, and he’s definitely not a very effective one. Not only did he leave the murder weapon unwiped an in close range of the scene of the crime, he didn’t even make sure to check that Peach was really dead. Which of course she isn’t, and I’m sure she’s gonna have a choice few words to say when she wakes up in the ER.
