Revenge 4x21 Aftermath

Last week I spent a lot of time wondering how exactly did Victoria plan to frame Emily for her murder after she committed suicide by blowing herself up with Grayson Manor. It’s one thing that their hatred for each other is now public knowledge, but the house and everything in it belongs to Emily, and why would she choose such a complicated and messy method for murder instead of literally anything else? These are the questions I would be asking first if I was a cop, but as it turns out if you’re the kind of cop who used to date and then got badly burnt by the suspect herself, then you can easily throw logic out of the window in favour of circumstantial evidence. As you may have guessed already, this week’s episode of Revenge was all about the aftermath of Victoria’s suicide/suspected murder, and unfortunately, with only two episodes left of the season (and possibly series), things were not looking too bright for Emily by the end of this hour.

At the beginning of the hour though, things were looking way too bright, what with her house being on fire and all. Sorry, that was terrible. Emily and David were watching the firemen working and she told them that fortunately there wasn’t anyone at home when it happened. So it was a pretty big surprise to anyone but the audience when a body was found. It was too badly burnt to tell its identity but Victoria’s ring was found in the rubble, which was pretty suspicious. This was not the only problem on Emily’s mind, however, as she met Mason and he told her that he’s writing a new book about her called One Big Lie, and if she doesn’t clear his name in two days he’s gonna send all the dirt he has on her to the authorities. Emily does the only thing she can and takes the things that could prove Mason’s innocence to a judge/lawyer/I don’t know exactly what, and tells her that she found this box belonging to Conrad in a hidden compartment of her house.

Meanwhile, Louse is very worried about Victoria after she’s been unable to reach her every since they last met, and goes to Margaux for help. Margaux tells her to calm down because everything’s probably fine, but then finds a letter from Victoria on her desk, and upon reading it it becomes pretty clear that it’s a suicide note. Now this is really weird: where exactly does this fit into Victoria’s alleged plan to frame Emily, I wonder? In any case, Louise doesn’t buy it because Victoria never showed any sign of suicidal tendencies, and when they go to her place to investigate, they find the door has been forced open and there’s blood on the wall. Louise then goes and accuses Emily of murder in the middle of a crowded restaurant, and Emily gets a call from the police soon after.

Emily was interrogated by Ben, which made me wonder if that is even allowed? Isn’t there a little thing called conflict of interest at play here, seeing as from Ben’s point of view Emily is the woman who recently fucked him over...? Emily doesn’t seem too bothered by this and tells him that Mason is his alibi, but since Mason is supposed to be dead, well, Ben is not too willing to believe this. Especially when she calls him to prove she’s telling the truth, and he doesn’t answer. Mason, what are you playing at? Emily tells Ben to check her car for fingerprints because Mason’s should be all over it, and poor little naive me thinks that surely this is going to get her out of it. Emily ran into Jack on her way out of the station (Jack is there because he saw the news as he was hanging out at Stevie’s house in LA and immediately called Nolan to ask him whether Emily has done it) and asks him to come to her house later, but he says as soon as he’s done with his own interrogation, he’s on the next flight back to LA. Ben also interrogates Jack because it’s a little bit suspicious that he left the Hamptons the night of the fire, and Jack finally asks the question that’s been bugging me all along: "Isn't this a conflict of interest, working on a case that involves your girlfriend?" Ben tells him that they broke up because Emily chose Jack over him as if that makes it all okay, but like, that’s STILL a conflict of interest, just from a different side? I don’t get how this can be allowed.

Meanwhile, Emily seeks out Mason and asks him what the hell is he doing, to which he tells her that he has no intention of being her alibi, or see her ever again for that matter, and also that he has a message from Victoria that she had asked him to pass along. Emily goes to the beachhouse and watches the video, mortified, as Victoria explains that he found the idea of framing Emily for her murder among the things on Nolan’s computer, namely that one time when Emily was planning to do the exact same thing to her. The police storm in just as the video finishes playing and deletes itself, and as Ben handcuffs Emily, he tells her that Mason’s fingerprints were not in her car, but Victoria’s hair and blood wasn’t. Obviously Emily realizes that Mason must have planted them there, and she tells Jack – who showed up after all – that she didn’t do it, Victoria set her up, as she is being led away to the police car.

Episode MVP: Emily VanCamp as Emily Thorne

Quote of the episode:
"Can't anybody follow a simple revenge plan?" – Nolan summing up the whole series basically

Random tidbits:
 - I know that last week I wasn’t happy with the prospect of Nolan ending up with someone who was in approximately three episodes, but that scene with him and Tony made me realize that they’re actually really cute together, and I can be fine with this... so naturally, Tony broke up with him in this very episode, just as Nolan was about to invite him to their first vacation together. Apparently he had started an adoption process two months ago and was going to get a baby in two days, and as he put it, "The thing a single dad needs is to be single." Bummer.

 - Emily overheard two policemen talking about David's alibi, aka his doctor’s appointment, and he finally told her about the cancer. I still hate this storyline. I just want Emily to have a happy ending with her dad being still alive, is that too much to ask for?
