Supernatural 10x20 Angel Heart

It’s been awhile since we last saw Claire Novak, the daughter of Castiel’s vessel Jimmy, and to be honest during that time I almost completely forgot about her. She was one of those characters that I really wanted to care about because I sympathized with their situation a lot, but there was something about her that just never clicked for me. Nevertheless, I was happy when she and Cas ended the episode she last appeared in in what I thought was a good place, with Claire taking off on her own but asking Cas if it was okay if she called him sometimes. I can only guess that she never actually called because in this episode she acted as if they never made up, so initially I wasn’t looking forward to yet another episode of Castiel trying to get closer to a grumpy Claire. Oh how things can change in only 40 minutes!

When the episode opened with Jimmy Novak arriving home and telling his wife, Amelia, that Castiel was gone, it was pretty obvious that something fishy was going on. True enough, poor Amelia soon woke up to see a guy sitting next to her, slicing her arm, and breathing in the fumes that came out...? It was freaky as hell, and what a fantastic way to kick off an episode! Meanwhile, Claire was in Tulsa, looking for a guy named Ronnie Cartwright, and hoping that he can help her trck down her mother, given that he was supposed to introduce her to some sort of a miuracle worker, according to Amelia’s diary. Ronnie denied having ever met her, but then slipped up on her last name which Claire never told him, and in his panic he knocked Claire out, called an ambulance to her, then ran off. Soon after this Cas got an emergency call and called in Sam and Dean to help him with Claire. "I need help from both of you. You were both troubled teens, you speak her language." Sounds logical to me. Claire reluctantly told them about Ronnie, and then escaped while the guys were discussing what to do. Sam went back to the motel and waited for Claire to show up, then after a bit of bonding promised to teach her how to hack into bank accounts. Meanwhile, Cas and Dean went back to the bar, found Ronnie, and got him to talk – he works for a faith healer called Peter Holloway, and his job is to recruit people who wouldn’t be missed. Poor Ronnie was not the luckiest person around, and soon he had to pay first with his sight, and then with his life, for betraying Peter.

The guys found out that Holloway had a farmhouse in the area and that Amelia was also staying around there, according to her credit card. Sam and Cas went to check it out but Dean and Claire had to stay behind, Dean because the Mark of Cain had been acting up and they couldn’t risk him going completely blood-crazy again, and Claire because of obvious reasons. So instead of sitting around all day, they went out to play minigolf, and this part was truly fantastic. I love Dean and Claire’s relationship already. Other than being super fun for us to watch, their little excursion also proved to be fruitful, because it helped Dean figure out what had caused Ronnie’s wounds: and angel sword, which is not to be confused with the angel blades we’d already see around a lot. This specific kind belongs to creatures called the Grigori, or the watcher angels, who went rogue long ago and started feeding on people. Dean tried to call the others but neither of them answered – Cas because he was busy trying to heal Amelia after telling her that Claire has grown up to be a strong-willed young woman, and Sam because he got knocked out and tied up by Holloway - so naturally this meant that he had to go after them, and after a little hesitation he allowed Claire to go with him too.

When they arrived at the scene Holloway was nowhere to be found and Dean bumped into Sam who apparently somehow got away... I rewatched this part of the episode a couple times and they literally didn’t give any explanation for this. Claire finally found her mom and they hugged and it was amazing, but Amelia was getting worse and when Claire tried to take her outside, they ran right into Holloway. He tried to kill Claire but Amelia jumped in the way and got stabbed instead of her daughter, then a little fight erupted between Holloway and the guys, which ended with Claire stabbing him as he was about to kill Cas. Unfortunately none of this was any help for Amelia who died soon after and ended up meeting Jimmy in heaven, and I was so upset I could have cried because this was just so fucking unnecessary. They were supposed to go and be together and live a happy life, dammit! Instead, Claire is now going to get a place to crash at from Jody Mills until she gets back on her feet. I hate this so much, and I can only hope that Sam’s earlier line about death not always being a goodbye was foreshadowing, because I can’t believe Claire had to watch her mom die after years of searching for her. What a cruel, fucked up thing to write. Ugh.

In the end, Dean gave Claire a movie they were talking about earlier, as well as a book called The Enochian Myth. Although Claire stated that she’s „not interested in any more homework”, Dean noticed that she took the angel sword, and also the stuffed Grumpy Cat toy that Cas had gotten her for her birthday. Aww :) Claire took off after hugging Cas, and suddenly I found myself wanting a spinoff about her. Maybe she could join up with those other hunter kids that Dean befriended, and become their leader or something? I don’t know, but I hope she’s going to be okay... this episode did everything that the previous ones about Claire failed to do, that is, made me truly care about her.

Episode MVP: Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester

Quotes of the episode:
"I need help from both of you. You were both troubled teens, you speak her language." - Castiel

"I got her at the Hot Topical." - Castiel

"Happy birthday. Don't shoot me." – Dean Winchester

"You know, Claire... you already got your revenge. You go down this path, our path...
it's not a long life."
"I don't know. You seem pretty old."
"Thanks." – Dean & Claire

"Going home or leaving home?"
"Just... going." – Claire Novak

Random tidbits:
 - Dean and Sam’s aliases this week: Agents Claptoon and Page. This is one running gag that will never get old.

 - Peter Holloway’s actual name was Tamiel, and he told Sam that angels have been feeding on humans since the dawn of man. That’s not distressing at all...
