If I’m keeping track correctly,
this is the first episode of The Vampire Diaries that has aired since it was
announced that Nina Dobrev is going to leave the show at the end of the season,
and judging by certain events in the episode itself, I think it’s safe to say
that we now have a pretty good idea as to how exactly her departure will be
handled. It’s going to be weird watching TVD without Elena... no, not weird...
more like completely surreal. Whether you liked her or not, she IS the main
character of the show, the driving force that kept it going for all these
years, and I honestly can’t imagine how they plan to go on without her. But the
show is already renewed for a seventh season so they’re going to have to try,
although I’m pretty sure that, unless Nina changes her mind a year from now,
season 7 will truly be the last hurrah. I will be sad to see this series go
because even in its arguably worst period (aka season 4-5) it was always
entertaining, most of the characters are very close to my heart, and except for
maybe Supernatural, I can’t really think of another show with such a gigantic,
complicated and fascinating mythology as this one.
But let’s not start digging the
grave just yet! Season 6 has been truly wonderful, and what a feat it was to bounce
back like this after all the mistakes of season 5. This episode followed suit,
as it was both exciting, emotional, hilarious, and a little bit confusing,
which is just the way I like my TVD.
The episode started by checking
in on Evil Stefan and Evil Caroline – who are still wonderful by the way – as he
was watching her attempts to mentally torture a man to death rather skeptically.
You see, they had made a bet when Stefan said Caroline couldn’t possibly scare
someone to death, and she was determined to prove him wrong. I do agree with
Stefan that compelling a guy to think he’s having a heart attack, then that he
can’t breathe, and finally that he has spiders crawling all over his body, only
for him to eventually succumb to a very real heart attack caused by all this
panicking, is very much cheating, but who am I to argue with Evil Caroline. She
declared herself to be the winner of the bet, and dragged Stefan off to fulfill
his punishment – doing karaoke. It’s always a treat to hear the wonderfully
talented Candice Accola sing on the show, and she was absolutely killing it
this time with Hit Me With Your Best Shot. Not everone agreed with me on this
though – Matt and Tyler walked in at the most unfortunate moment, and probably
immediately started to wish that they haven’t, as Caroline jumped on the chance
to test his two former boyfriends in a bit of Caroline Trivia. The catch:
whoever loses, dies. Wow. Matt and Tyler obviously weren’t too happy about this
turn of events, although the way the kept reacting to everything made me wonder
if they’re even aware of the fact that Stefan and Caroline don’t have their humanities,
or if they think that they’re simply being dicks for no reason. Matt and Tyler
have been kinda out of the loop for a good few episodes now so I wouldn’t blame
them for being confused. In any case, Stefan got bored and answered the last
question which meant that they’re both sentenced to death, and then in a scene
of fighting and confusion Tyler accidentally stabbed Matt in the stomach, which
was an interesting turn of events because if he was to die, Tyler would become
a werewolf again, and Matt would be... well, dead. I was fully prepared for
this to happen because let’s face it, it’s nothing short of a miracle that Matt
made it this far into the show, being the only remaining human in the cast and
everything, but then the episodes’s other main storyline intervened and saved
the day, so let’s just come back to this later when it will make more sense.
Damon was still set on finding
Stefan so that their mother can perform her role as his anchor and bring back
his humanity. The plan seemed simple enough until it was revealed that Lily has
no intention of doing any such thing. She won’t even try, but not because she
doesn’t want Stefan to be himself again. It’s simply because she doesn’t
believe she can do it. In what was probably the most emotional scene of the
episode, she revealed to Damon that after she was turned into a vampire,
everything she’s previously felt for her sons was simply gone. She doesn’t love
them anymore as a mother should, and that’s the reason why she was never coming
to get them after she has found out that they’been turned into vampires as
well. This was obviously devastating news for Damon but the guy is not exactly
famous for his tendency to give up, so he simply decided to coach Lily in what
to say to Stefan to achieve the desired effect. This was both incredibly
beautiful and heartbreaking, and I felt really, really terrible for both of the
Salvatore brothers while I was watching it, but at least it worked, and Stefan
is back to being himself again! Thank God. As much as I enjoy watching Paul
Wesley play evil, it’s really comforting to have Good Stefan back. Now, if he
could only do the same for Caroline... At the moment, we don’t even know where
she is or what she’s planning. After Damon and Lily interrupted their little
murder party at the bar, she stabbed Stefan so she could get a headstart on all
of them, and quickly fled the scene. But at least Matt is fine. He refused to
accept Elena’s blood (Damon didn’t even try to give him some which didn’t make
much sense, he was all like „take him to the hospital” when the guy was inches
from bleeding out... but I guess I can’t really blame him for having other
things on his mind) but the doctors managed to save him the traditional way. I
guess Matt really is here to stay until the very end, huh.
Speaking of Elena, she found out
about Jo’s pregnancy, and while she hugged her and claimed that she was happy
for her, her face completely betrayed her real emotions. Uh oh. Obviously, she
doesn’t know that Damon is hiding the cure from her, and he’s staunchly
refusing to tell her even though this kind of thing never ends well... come on
Damon, just tell her already, she’s gonna find out anyway and it won’t be
pretty if it’s from someone else. Anyway, Elena IS getting the cure, right? And
that’s how she’s gonna leave the show. I don’t believe they’d ever kill off
Elena Gilbert, so Damon will probably just compel her to forget all about
Mystic Falls and move somewhere else, where she can be safe... or at least that’s
my theory anyway.
But the episode wasn’t over yet!
Jo had yet another shocker to deliver, this time for all of us. Apparently, it
was extremely important to not let Lily bring over her „travelling companions”
from the prison world, because as it turns out, they were all witches expelled
from the Gemini coven who Lily have turned into vampires... and while normally
witches immediately lose their magical powers upon becoming vampires, these are
special witches. Like their
coven-mate Kai, they are not inherently magical, but instead have to syphon
magic from another source to be able to do any spells, and apparently as
vampires, they can syphon from themselves? Don’t ask me to tell you why, but
that’s how it is, and they can never, under any circumstances, come over to our
world, because, as Jo very powerfully put it, "Imagine Kai with the
bloodlust of a vampire. Now imagine six of them." That sounds terrifying
alright. And if only Damon hadn’t given Lily the ascendant, we would never have
to worry about them becoming a real threat. Dammit, Damon.
Episode MVP: Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore
Quote of the episode:
"My dearest Elena, I hope
this finds you well." – Lily Salvatore
Random tidbits:
- Enzo also had a storyline this
week which was slightly more entertaining than usual, but still very far from
what I expected Enzo’s role to be when he was upgraded to a series regular. This
week he was about to take Sarah Salvatore to her real family, but froze up when
Lily opened the door for them, and then in a series of flashbacks it was
revealed that Lily was the one who turned him into a vampire in 1903, when he
was dying of tuberculosis. He’s not as grateful for this as you’d expect
because he’s still angry at her from leaving him there with that insatiable
hunger every newborn vampire feels, and he promptly called her „the most
dreadful person I’ve ever met”. I wonder if this storyline will have any
followup.
- Or the one where he told Sarah
everything about her family, then tried to compel her to forget it (for no
reason that I can comprehend), only to find out that she’s been on vervain all
along (four for you, Matt Donovan), and then he let her go to live a full and
happy life elsewhere. Yeah, because that always happens on The Vampire Diaries.
- Enzo’s real name was also
revealed to be Lorenzo. Who knew.
- Lily Salvatore’s attempt at
sending a text message was hilarious. "My dearest Elena, I hope this finds
you well". Oh dear.
- Speaking of Lily, apparently it's
been only one day since she and Damon met, which I don’t really know how to
process because for me it feels like it’s been months, but at least a week.
